That's where all goes down, Cho just can't project that feeling but someone else could have done so. It was all about the way the character walks, looks, smiles, stares or even stays still. A mild try to bring Spike to live action, which is sad because it wasn't about the suit, hair, earphones or lines. *His face and facial expressions doesn't resemble the originalĪll of this have resulted in what we saw. *His physical feats don't quite get the look It's easy to not feel Cho as an obvious Spike choice and even the most resentful of us felt like rather "hating" the reasoning and people behind his casting. I think most of us don't ever hated him because of being the one to play Spike. Maybe there's a misunderstanding when it comes to John Cho getting hate. He gave his best, unfortunately didn't got there and it's not his fault. They were just shot very generically and they didn't really show off Spike's unique style of fighting. If you look at some YouTube original content that cosplay a few Bebop scenes, most of those are FAR better than the Netflix show. The flaws in his portrayal of Spiegel have more to do with everything outside of his control. He did far better than I thought he would. I look at Julia and Vicious, and he doesn't look too far from their age in comparison. I hate this "ageism" criticism he gets lately. He didn't have the jazzy bluesy coolness to him, but he did have the calm demeanor, comfortable, relaxed, yet confident stride about him. Choo did a good job in "translating" the character to that new medium. I think Spike is a tough character to precisely transition into a live-action show.
